Perm rods are one of the products used for a perm.
The perm was a popular 1980s hairstyle. Since then, the perm has nearly disappeared from the list of services cosmetologists had been providing, until recently. Now, "The New York Times" states that many women are taking the plunge and sometimes even disguising perms under the term "wave." There are a few different products used when undertaking this procedure, which can vary depending upon hair type, stylist and other considerations.
Alkaline Solution
The perm solution softens the hair, allowing it to be shaped and molded by means of rods. An alkaline perm solution is sometimes referred to as a "cold" perm since no heat is needed to activate the chemical reaction. The active ingredient is ammonium thioglycolate and typically has a pH between 8.2 and 9.6. This type of perm tends to produce stronger curls that last longer, without the need for lengthy processing, making it a good choice for those with thick, coarse hair. Those wanting tight curls would benefit from this type of solution.
Acid Solution
An acid-based perm solution produces a more wavy, loose curl and is better on color treated hair. This type of perm processes slower than the alkaline and requires a source of heat. Originally, salons used the heat hood, but advancements have been made to include a heat source within the processing solution itself. The pH ranges from 4.5 to 6.5 with the active ingredient being glycerol monothioglycolate. Although this type of perm is gentler on your hair, it usually relaxes faster than an alkaline perm.
Rods and End Papers
Rods are chosen based on the type of outcome the person desires. There are several choices ranging from very small rods to large, which produce tight curls to very loose curls, respectively. Often times they are even color coded to help easily determine which to use. When wrapping, a piece of end paper is placed at the end of the chunk of hair before it is rolled onto the rod. It is helpful to have an experienced stylist help determine which size rod will yield the type of curl anticipated.
Neutralizer and Moisturizer
Once the perm has processed, a moisturizer is applied in order to restore protein and moisture back into the hair. The harsh chemicals used during a perm can remove natural moisture from the shaft of the hair. The moisturizer and perm is then locked in by using an oxidizing agent called a neutralizer. It is left on the hair for about five minutes and then the rods are removed. This is used following any type of perm and helps hold the curl in the hair. Without it, the curl will wash out quickly.
