Grow Out Straightened Hair

Many people like to change their hairstyles dramatically. Some people with curly hair like to straighten it while those with straight hair get perms. But because the hair grows about one-half inch each month, the straightened or permed hair gets replaced by your natural-style hair. Short of cutting off all the old hair, the best thing to do is to allow the straightened or relaxed hair to grow until eventually you have your natural style back. Growing out hair takes time, but there are a few things to do to keep hair looking healthy and in good shape during the process.

Instructions

1. Wash hair with a moisturizing shampoo with protein. Apply the shampoo to the head and massage into the scalp and rest of the hair strands. Rinse out with cool water to protect new hair growth from the dryness caused by hot water. The new natural hair is fragile because of the curls which break more easily than straight hair. The moisturizing shampoo helps to lubricate the strand and the protein strengthens the hair. This is also helpful because the straightened hair is fragile due to the chemical process.

2. Condition the hair after every shampoo. Use a moisturizing conditioner for both, the new growth and the old hair. Massage into the hair and leave on for up to 5 minutes. Rinse out the conditioner with cool water. Conditioners help to get rid of tangles that are more common with curly hair, such as the new growth.

3. Use a wide-tooth comb to get ride of tangles. Start with the ends and work your way up to the roots. Be especially careful when combing this area. This new curly hair growth is fragile when wet.

4. Trim hair every month. Use a good pair of scissors or go to a salon to have the ends of the straightened hair cut off. Trim about a half inch to maintain hair length, advises Long Locks. According to Hair Finder, in order to grow out straightened hair "you will need to allow the hair to grow out and it would eventually be cut off through maintenance trims."

5. Braid the hair when wet. Let hair dry and then unbraid the hair and comb through. This hairstyle, suggested in the article "Black Hair Care Tips, Style and FAQs" on the Treasured Locks website, allows you to have two textures on the same hair stand, but a uniform look so the demarcation between straightened and new growth hair is not noticeable. .
