Hairstyles For Africanamerican Brides

Several stunning hairstyle options are availble for your big day.

Your wedding day is approaching and you're in search of a hairstyle specifically for African-American hair. Style options include braids, curls, straight, long, short and cropped. If you want to look your best, you'll need to determine which style suits your hair type and personality. If you want to be a glamorous bride, for example, go with long, flowing tendrils. For a sleeker look, go with a spiked, cropped style or a bob cut.

Short

Finger waves are an elegant option for a bride's hairstyle. The finger wave is taken from the 1930s classic hairdo of the same name. To create this style, dampen your hair with water, comb it out straight and then saturate it with setting lotion. Part your hair on the side or the middle. Take a section of hair -- approximately two inches -- and press it down near the part with your left index finger while making a sharp ridge with the end of a tailed comb. Press the tail upward. Do not release the comb's tail until the ridge is held firmly between your index and second finger. Do this for each two-inch section of hair. Finger waves are an option for a bride with a smaller head piece, as it won't overpower the shorter style.

You might want to try cropped hair -- where the sides are cut short with some longer hair remaining on top. One option is the spiky look. Leave the sides and back down and spike the top with gel or mousse. This edgier look works best for a daring bride with a wedding veil attached to the back of her hair via pins or a small comb.

Medium

The bob is a sleek, classic look for any bride. If you wear your hair in this style, go with a veil attached to the crown of the head. For added flair, include blunt-cut bangs that fall midway between the hair line and the eyebrows.

If you have straight, medium-length hair and prefer an updo, have your stylist curl your entire head. Pull the curls up to your crown and fasten loosely with hair pins. For a romantic touch, allow loose tendrils to cascade around your hairline. This look works with any kind of veil.

Long

Like medium-length hair, you can curl long hair and pin it up with decorative barrettes. If you prefer a sleeker appearance, leave your hair straight. You can also try a half updo. To accomplish this, take a small chunk of hair, approximately 1/2-inch, and use a curling iron to create a ringlet. Do this for each section until all your hair is curled. Pin up the top half with combs or barrettes, leaving the bottom free flowing. Any veil works with these styles.

Natural

Natural means no chemical straightening has been applied. Natural hairstyles include corkscrews, braids and dreads. If you have your longer hair in any of these styles, you can leave your hair down or pin it up with floral pins and barrettes. If you wear your hair natural, keep it well conditioned to eliminate dry, split ends and ensure your hair will be soft and shiny on your big day.

Considerations

Regardless of hair length, any of these styles are an option for the blushing bride. Long or medium hair can be cut shorter for the cropped style. Add hair pieces or extensions to short hair to achieve the look of longer styles.
