Cheerleading competitions revolve around strong athletes who have devoted endless hours to their sport. Matching uniforms, makeup, glitter and accessories are all part of the competition gear. Female cheerleaders have another important competition accessory: their hair. It must match the excitement of their uniforms--and stay out of their way as they do intricate jumps and flips.
Up and Out of the Way
Cheerleaders' hair may be bedecked in ribbons and streamers, but it has to stay out of their eyes and away from teammates' grips when performing flips and climbs. Two of the best ways to ensure this are ponytails and pigtails. Ponytails (the cheerleader's hair gathered together in one bunch) and pigtails (two bunches) may be dressed up with pretty scrunchies, hair bows and streamers in team colors. To make a ponytail, hold a scrunchie or elastic band in one hand, then gather your hair in the other. Wind the scrunchie around the hair until it is secure. For pigtails, separate hair into two bunches, then perform the ponytail process on each bunch. Both styles may be worn straight or curly, and positioned in multiple places on the head (top of head for a sporty look, or sides for a quirky look). Another way to keep hair off the face is a bun. To make a bun, create a ponytail, then pull your hair halfway through (not all the way) the final loop. The bun is an "unfinished" look and is not meant to be sleek. It will not hold through many jumps and flips; it is meant to be used for a short performance.
Accessories
Whether you sport a ponytail, pigtails, bun, or other more intricate style, accessorizing your hair is one of the most enjoyable parts of dressing for a competition. Check with your coach to see where to purchase team-colored ribbons, scrunchies, dangles or flowers. Some cheerleaders prefer to buy hairpieces instead of curling their own (or to augment shorter hair). Hairpieces come in many colors or may be dyed to match your own hair color. They can be clipped in as a ponytail or cluster of curls on top of your head.
