What Vitamins Should A Man Losing Hair Be Taking

The main type of hair loss that both men and women experience is pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia. Within this condition, the hair growth duration is shortened and the hair follicle becomes more superficial and hair more easily can fall out. While there are synthetic medications available that treat pattern hair loss in men and women, natural remedies are commonly used to promote hair growth and stronger hair follicles.

Vitamin B

Vitamin B is used to treat hair loss by its ability to maintain healthy stress levels. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is linked not only to health problems, such as stress-related weight gain, but also hair loss. While vitamin B is available in singular pills, a multivitamin that is enriched in vitamin B is the ideal dosage.

Consume the recommended daily amount of a vitamin B multivitamin twice a day. Take the vitamins with at least eight ounces of water and drink at least 10 eight-ounce containers of water during each day to flush the system and promote vitamin B absorption.

Grape Seed Extract

Grape seed extract is catalogued as an effective antioxidant, which aides in promoting hair regrowth. The properties in grape seed extract work to block dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, from accumulating in the hair follicles.

The DHT hormone attaches itself to the hair follicle and begins to weaken hair growth and durability, ultimately resulting in overall/pattern hair loss.

Grape seed extract is available in pill form as well as in oil forms. To ingest grape seed extract take three pure grape seed extract capsules, available in any vitamin store, two times a day with eight ounces of water. Consult a physician before beginning any supplement routine, especially if you have allergies.

To use grape seed extract as a topical application, gently massage 3 tbsp. of grape seed oil directly onto the scalp for 10 minutes. Focus mainly on areas where hair loss is prevalent. Allow the oil to rest for 10 more minutes after massaging in, and rinse with shampoo and conditioner.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Sage

Apple cider vinegar is acidic, which effectively dissolves toxins and dirt that clog hair follicles, which can prevent hair growth. Sage is an essential oil, which contains various properties that act as an antiseptic and when combined with apple cider vinegar, sage helps mask its strong vinegar scent.

Mix 2 oz. of apple cider vinegar with 2 oz. of purified water. Stir the mixture to ensure the vinegar and water have properly mixed. Add five drops of sage essential oil to the mixture and stir. Drench the hair in the solution and place a towel over the head for 30 minutes. Rinse the solution out of the hair and repeat every day for a week and then every other day after that. For those with long hair, double the amount of apple cider vinegar, water and sage oil used.

Care For A Hair Permanent

Care for a Hair Permanent

Permanents produce varying effects on your hairstyle, from tight curls to simply giving your hair more body and wave. Caring for a hair permanent properly will keep your permed hair looking healthy and help extend the life of your perm.

Instructions

1. Follow the instructions given regarding when to wash freshly permed hair, typically at least 24 hours.

2. Use products designed for permed hair, which are typically made with more gentle ingredients.

3. Condition your hair frequently, possibly even every day. Only use a nickel-sized amount or slightly more if your hair is long. Work through the hair to the ends and rinse thoroughly. You might also consider a leave-in conditioner in addition if your hair is particularly dry.

4. Comb hair with a wide toothed comb or brush, working from the ends to the roots. Be gentle, as tugging too much on the hair will cause split ends and make your permed hair look frizzy.

5. Dry your hair with a diffuser, which keeps too much heat from being concentrated in one area. For more waves and body, style hair gently with a brush as you dry your hair. You also might consider letting your hair air dry if tight curls are the look you desire.

6. Plan to have a haircut about every six weeks, which will reduce the weight on your curls and actually have the effect of making the curl more pronounced again. If you wait too long, your hairdresser will probably have to cut more damaged ends off, shortening the life of your perm overall.

7. Care for a home permanent by having it cut a few days after you perm it. This will remove any of the dead ends caused by the chemicals in the permanent.

Fast Easy Updos

Updos can be complicated and fussy, but there are many you can do that are fast and easy.

Most updos involve creating a twist or a roll at the back of your head. Once you've mastered this technique, there are unlimited styles of updos that you can do. Some quick updo styles using a twist or a simple ponytail are ideal for medium to long hair. Shorter hairstyles can also create a modified version of an updo.

Instructions

Creating a Roll or Twist

1. Sweep hair over to one side and brush it so it's smooth.

2. Secure it in place with bobby pins. Insert the pins vertically, straight up the back. Thin or fine hair may have to be sprayed with hairspray or gel to give the pins something to grip onto. Another option is to cross pins over each other in an "X." The pins should feel tight.

3. Use a brush to fold the hair back over the bobby pins, tucking the ends under so they are hidden. If hair is long, the ends can be left up, so they extend out of the top of the roll, or they can be placed down so they extend from the bottom.

4. Slide bobby pins through the fold of the hair to secure the roll.

5. Finish by spraying firm-hold or maximum-hold hair spray. If ends are left out, you can either curl them or brush them smooth.

Easy Curly Updo

6. Dry your hair naturally, using product to ensure curls are smooth. Although this style is for curly hair, if you have straight hair, curl it when dry with hot rollers or a curling iron and then spritz with hair spray or curl-boosting product before moving to Step 2.

7. Scrunch hair at the top of the head for more fullness, or back comb.

8. Pull dry hair up to the crown of your head in sections of about 1 inch thick. Secure each section in place with bobby pins as you go. Allow curls to fall over the pins.

Messy Chignon

9. Flip hair over and spray with hairspray to give your hair texture and keep your chignon from falling.

10. Pull hair up and back with your hands, pushing forward at the roots for volume.

11. Twist at the nape of your neck and secure ends with bobby pins. Continue inserting pins into the twist and pulling pieces out to loosen the style.

12. Mist the chignon with shine spray. The style shouldn't look perfect.

Half Updo for Short Hairstyles

13. Pull the top section of your hair back, securing with an elastic at the crown of your head.

14. Back comb the ponytail close to the rubber band to give volume.

15. Fluff out the ends with a hair pick (comb) and spray with hairspray.

16. Comb the bottom section of hair (loose section) and flip slightly using a flat iron.

17.Apply pomade to create shine and separate ends. An alternative is to curl the bottom section under to create a smooth bob.

Make Rag Rollers And Curl Your Hair Naturally

Rag curls were fashionable in the late 19th century.

Rag curls, or "poor woman" curls, are an economical way to get bouncing ringlets. Rip the rags from old sheets or a worn-out cotton shirt, in strips that wrap around sections of the hair. Leave the rags overnight and your head will be full of ringlets the next morning; a quick tousle with your hands will make you ready for the day.

Instructions

1. Tear the old sheet into 4 to 5-inch-long strips. They need to be long enough to wrap the hair around and tie off in a knot. Tear, or cut, the strips to a 1/2-inch width. Tear enough to cover your entire head.

2. Separate the first 1/2-inch section of your hair away from the rest. Begin from the front of your head and work your way back, separating out 1/2-inch sections as you go. If you want smaller ringlets, separate out smaller sections of hair.

3. Mist each hair section with water until slightly damp. Rub gel or mousse into the section before rolling. This will ensure the curl remains smooth after you remove the rag.

4. Wrap the end of each section of hair around the center of a rag. Roll the rags up the length of the hair toward the scalp.

5. Tie the ends of the rag together around the hair. Tie the rag into a bow, and add a double knot for more security.

6. Leave the rag curlers in your hair overnight. Cover the curls with a shower cap to protect your hair.

7. Remove the rags the next morning. Remove each rag separately and carefully.

8. Mist the curls with hairspray to set them, then lightly separate them with your fingers.

Natural Hair Care For African American Woman

African American hair is known to be brittle and difficult to maintain in its natural state. Some women perm or excessively straighten their hair because they are frustrated with their natural hair. There are ways to take care of natural African American hair, without resorting to expensive treatments or damaging it with heat. With a few tips you can have healthy, African American hair.

Start in The Shower

Many African American women make their first mistakes in the shower. Hair is at its most vulnerable and brittle state when it is wet. To preserve hair and diminish damage or breakage, invest in a shampoo that does not strip the hair of its natural oils. Shampoos that are sulfate free or all natural are best for African American hair. Sulfates are used in shampoos to make a big lather and do not affect how clean your hair actually gets. Exceeding three shampoos a week is risky for your hair. Excessive shampooing eventually dries out the hair. Failure to condition your hair deprives it of the protective properties of conditioners.

Post Shower

Do not comb wet hair with any styling tool that is not a wide-toothed comb. African American hair is brittle and will most certainly break off if combed with an instrument that has thin bristles. Blow drying also causes damage. Always use a heat protectant before blow drying your hair. Heat protectants prevent excessive damage and actually help improve the quality of your hair while helping it dry.

Styling the Hair

Heat styling is popular among women, especially African American women with natural hair. Having natural non-chemically processed hair can be difficult. Managing hard-to-straighten hair is virtually impossible for some and so they turn to heat. Flat irons and blow driers straighten and smooth the hair to create a sleeker appearance. Unfortunately, heat devices are damaging to the hair especially without heat protectants. It is important that natural African American hair is styled often without the use of heat.

Hair Accessories and Styling Tools

Many women do not realize the effects styling tools and accessories have on their hair. Cotton- or metal-tipped hair elastics or headbands lead to hair breakage. To have healthy hair, breakage must be reduced, which means switching to hair-friendly tools and accessories. Satin hair elastics and headbands are good replacements for plastic or metal ones. Also, the metal tips of any combs or brushes will scratch and damage the scalp.

Moisturizing

Moisture is essential for African American hair because replenishing oils as well as deep conditioning is what helps keep hair healthiest. Make a commitment to keep moisturizing the hair at least two days a week on top of the conditioning. Natural hair is dry and sucks up any moisture it can get. To retain soft, shiny hair, you will need lots of moisture. Olive oil, carrot oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil are all good oils for the hair.

Sharpen An Andis Toutliner

The Andis T-Outliner is a trimmer that is used to create fine hairline outlines on a short haircut such as a fade or clip. When the clipper blades become dull, they do not perform as well, and will sometimes cause nicks, or small cuts, on the skin of the hair cutting client. It is important to keep the Andis T-Ouliner trimmer sharp and in good condition to ensure optimal performance.

Instructions

1. Visually inspect your trimmer. Look for dirt or hair that may be stuck in between the front and back teeth. The clipper may appear dull when it is just dirty. If you see any buildup on the outside teeth of the trimmer, spray a small amount of Wahl Coolant on the blade, and brush thoroughly with a clipper brush. Remove excess using a towel, and then apply clipper oil to the outside top blade and around the edges with clipper in the on position.

2. If the above method does not improve the sharpness of the Andis T-Outliner blade, remove the screws from the front plate and lift off the plate. Remove the blade underneath the clipper plate carefully. Use a clipper cleaning brush to dust the area underneath the plate and blade.

3. Spray the removed blades with Wahl Coolant Spray to clean and sanitize the clipper blades. Replace the blade and then the clipper plate and screws, being sure to align the blade and plate.

4. Turn on the clipper and apply oil to the top and sides of the blades and plate. Performing these actions will help your Andis T-Outliner cut as efficiently as possible for the life of the blade.

5. If your clipper blades do not become sharper by using these tips, send them to Andis for sharpening or purchase a new blade.

Hairdos Of The Forties

The 1940s was all about glitz and glamor, and the iconic hairdos of old Hollywood are still worn by starlets today. Although the 1940s were largely defined by World War II, the gorgeous movie actresses still managed to hit the red carpet with their perfectly dressed beaus, making sure the public still had an appreciation for style. Silky waves, voluminous curls and ultra-glossy shine are just a few of the hairstyle trends that were made popular by actresses such as Veronica Lake, Lana Turner and Rita Hayworth.

Long Hairdos

The long, sleek and glamorous blond waves of Veronica Lake are perhaps the most well known of all hairdos from the 1940s. These undulating waves were generally side parted, with a sweeping side bang that gave any woman a coquettish, flirty eye - a look that went perfectly with the pouty red lipstick that was so popular at the time. Many variations of this wavy, luxurious hairstyle were popular with women, such as half-up styles that used large curls. Famous Hollywood starlet Rita Hayworth also wore a version of this hairdo and frequently styled her bangs by curling them up on top of her head. Long hairdos with a silky sheen and sensual volume were the most popular amongst Hollywood actresses of the 1940s.

Short Hairdos

The short, sassy hairdos of the 1920s were long gone by the time the 1940s came around, but there were several styles of cropped locks that achieved popularity thanks to actresses like Gene Tierney and Ingrid Bergman. Short hairdos in the 1940s looked very similar to long hair, with women sporting side-parts with shiny, undulating waves that hung just above the shoulders. Short hairdos were usually sleek and smooth near the top of the head, with volume at the roots and bouncy curls facing inward on the bottom. Women achieved this look by doing pin curls on shorter hair, then brushing the curls out.

Updos

Updos were a very popular style in the 1940s, both for long and short styles. Women often pinned their large, shiny curls on top of their heads for special events and occasions like weddings. Women put their hair up with both large and small curls and often used accessories such as tiaras for a little extra glamour. Chinese and Asian inspired updos were also very popular in the 1940s.

Make An Arab Costume

This attire is common in the Gulf region of the Arabian Peninsula.

Arab culture has an abundance of attire to choose from when making a costume. For example, in the Gulf nations, men commonly wear long, white robes with white draping headdresses. Women generally wear black decorative robes with headscarves that partially cover their hair. Today, most Arabs dress in Western style clothing, but for costume parties, it can be fun to dress up in a more traditional Arab (or perhaps Bedouin) style of clothing.

Instructions

Male Gulf Region Costume

1. Visit a local Arab/Middle Eastern store in your area to find ready-made long white robes for sale. Many Arab grocery stores will also carry traditional robes and head scarves for men.

2. Order traditional Arab clothing from any of the numerous online stores such as Shukr, Desert Online and Al-Hannah. Many stores will refer to the clothing as 'Islamic.' Most of the time, the two are interchangeable. If in doubt, call the company and double check.

3. Tie a turban around your head or wear a keffiyah, a draping white cloth with a black ring placed on top to hold the cloth in place. Wear brown sandals to finish the look.

Traditional Female Costume

4. Visit a local Arab/Middle Eastern store in your area or online to find an long, embroidered and colorful robe or a plain black robe.

5. Tie a colorful scarf around your head like a turban, or wear a head scarf. Place a black cloth over your head, and then drape one edge of it over the opposite shoulder to hold it in place.

6. Wear sandals and lots of gold color jewelry.

7. Apply black eyeliner, called kohl, around your eyes.

Do Hair For Semiformal Events

Semi-formal hairstyles are a little more relaxed than the more sleek and pulled-together formal styles, and require a little more attention than the simple thrown-together casual looks. A half-up half-down style is versatile and is workable into any hair type or length. Depending on your hair type or your specific cut, you may need to use more product or hair pins to hold the top section of your hair up, but you can still do it.

Instructions

1. Straighten your hair first if your hair is wavy or curly and you want it to be smoother. If your hair is already straight you should style it first and then curl it at the end.

2. Section off your hair so that you have a top-center part that runs from the front to the back of your crown. Pull your bangs out of this part if you have them. Hold the section with a clip to keep it separate. Pull the rest of your hair in a hair elastic to keep it out of the way.

3. Take the top section out of the clip and use a bristle brush to start teasing by thinner sections, starting from the back. Hold each section straight up, spritz toward the root with hairspray, and make short quick brushes down close to your scalp. This will create a bump and how much you tease will depend on how big and high your bump will be.

4. Smooth down down the top of the bump and spray a little hair spray. You goal is to make a smooth top without making it too rigid. Its okay if the top is a little bumpy but not too out-of-control.

5. Take the rest of your hair out of the hair elastic and style it way you want. Use some heat protecting spray if you are going to curl the ends of your hair or your bangs. A decorative clip on the back would be effective in hiding any visible bobby pins if you don't want them showing.

Do Mexican Ties In Your Hair

Hairstyles are as unique as the person wearing them. Most young adults identify themselves with their hairstyles. Instead of adding color to your hair with hair dye that can harm your hair, try adding color with thread. Mexican ties add fun and color to your hair by using a few different colors of thick thread (the kind of thread bracelets are made with). These ties are great for young girls who want to do something different with their hair.

Instructions

1. Tie all of the threads together into a knot.

2. Tie a very small area of hair together in a tiny ponytail. Secure the top and the bottom of the little ponytail with two hair ties.

3. Fit the knot of the threads under the hair tie at the top of the ponytail.

4. Start with one color (for this case, pink). Hold the hair and the other colors (yellow and orange) taut with your right hand.

5. Bring the pink thread out to the left of the yellow and orange threads on a 45 degree angle. With your left hand, hold the middle of the pink thread down as you fold the rest of that thread past the ponytail and the yellow and orange threads (the pink thread will look like the number 4 as it crosses over the other threads and ponytail).

6. Loop the pink thread around the back of the ponytail and the other thread and pull it through the other side.

7. Pull the thread tight, but gently. Continue doing this 12 times with the pink thread.

8. Repeat these steps with the yellow and orange thread. Then continue all over again until the entire ponytail is threaded.

9. Continue these steps once more with each color so the thread extends past the length of the hair. Tie the threads into a knot to finish the tie.

Haircuts For Women With Short Curly Gray Hair

Some short haircuts for curly hair work just as well on gray hair.

Certain haircuts work best with certain types of hair. If you have curly hair, having a short hair style can help draw attention to your curls. Your face frame will also dictate which styles work best for you. However, short, curly gray hair can offer a polished look on most women.

Straight Bob

Even if you have curly gray hair, you can opt for a straight or blunt bob haircut. Even though your hair is curly, the straight edges across the bottom of the bob create a sleek look. This hair style can be cut to any length, ranging from brushing against the tops of shoulders to ending just below the ear lobe. This cut works well when tousled with styling cream and smoothed down with polishing serum to keep flyaway grays under control.

Pixie Cut

A pixie cut is the short hair style which involves plenty of layers. For short, curly gray hair you will need to work around the natural curl of your hair and how it rests against your head. Basics of the pixie cut typically include hair cut out around ears and longer hair on top. When this cut is used with curly hair, you can tousle the curls on top and smooth down the shortest hairs to create a look that provides some height to the hair style.

Angled Bob

Similar to a blunt-cut bob, an angled bob offers a different style option for short hair. Hair is cut shorter in the back and then angles to longer lengths towards the front of the face. Using this cut for curly gray hair will give your look a modern appeal. This style can be changed by the use of different tools and hair products. A thin barrel curling iron and curl defining spray can give you a curly bob. Using a flat iron and straightening spray can produce an angled bob which is sleek, polished and dramatic.

Close-Cropped

Close-cropped hair cuts, those where all the hair is trimmed to a length of one-quarter to one-half inch in length, is one option to truly highlight your gray and curly hair. This look works best on those with strong facial ,as attention is drawn to your face. One other way this style works is if you wear glasses, preferably fashionable ones that also draw attention. To make the most of this cut, use a polishing or shine serum to keep the short curls under control.

Haircuts That Flatter Round Faces

Go to your haircut prepared to choose the right style for your face.

While the major pro of a round-shaped face is that the somewhat childish look lends anyone a naturally younger appearance, the main con is it can be hard to find a flattering haircut. Thin, oval faces tend to look good with any style, but a round face is trickier to work with. Before you despair, remember there are plenty of beautiful celebrities with round faces that make it work, so you can, too.

Long and Straight

Long hair lovers rejoice because long, straight hair is a perfect option for someone with a round face. Straight, sleek hair that continues to mid-chest or longer creates a elongating look because it pulls the eye straight from the top down to the bottom of the strands. This works well for a round face because it pulls attention away from the shape of the face and focuses the eye toward the bottom of the hair, creating an illusion of a longer face.

Below the Chin

For a shorter look or a long look with layers, aim for a few inches below the chin. If you opt for all one length, choose a look that ends at least 2 inches below your chin. Similarly, if you have longer hair with short angles, make sure the shortest angle falls below your chin. Hair that ends at the chin focuses the attention directly on the chin itself and consequently the bottom of the cheeks, which is exactly what a woman with a round face wants to avoid. This cut will create an even wider effect because your chin and hair end at the same place.

Above the Chin

In the same way that long hair should end below the chin, short hair should end safely above it. Short, choppy layers can look wonderful on someone with a round face because the layers will take the attention away from wider cheeks. Additionally, the short layers or angles can physically cover the edges of your face, effectively narrowing the remaining parts.

Side Parts and Bangs

A side part can do wonders to soften the look of your face and add length, which is good for someone with a round face. Blunt bangs and parts that run straight down the center should be avoided because these accentuate and call attention to the face shape. Side parts and side bangs help mitigate any face shape because they draw some of the attention away. The best way to wear side bangs is in a long, wispy fashion; they will visually break up the face and have a lengthening effect.

Stepbystep Guide To Easy Updos

Updos can be a convenient and gorgeous way to add some variety to your hair's same-old, same-old routine. Designing a becoming updo of your own doesn't have to involve big bucks, tons of time or feats of personal contortion. With just a few simple styling products, a little time, and some practice, you can soon be on the road to hairstyle success all on your own.

Laid-Back Braids

Up-front braids can be a fabulous way to control unruly bangs and layers, according to Marc Mena, celebrity stylist for Garnier Fructis. In an article for Fitness magazine, Mena lays out the steps for achieving this easy, breezy updo. First, add texture to your hair so the braids don't wind up flat and unappealing. One method involves applying spray gel to your hair the night before, and then securing it in two or more buns.

The next day, release the buns and part your hair like you usually do. Rub styling wax or pomade onto your fingers and apply it to the hair on each side of your head. Create an inch-wide French braid on one side of your head, then the other. If you don't quite have the knack for French braiding, weave your hair into a tight traditional braid instead. Secure each braid with a mini elastic band.

Next, pull your hair back into a low, tight ponytail. Rub styling wax or pomade onto your fingers again, applying it to the hair in back. Twirl narrow pieces of hair around your finger, then pin up random pieces of hair using bobby pins. The final step is to pin the ends of each braid under the ponytail in back, tucking it beneath pieces to conceal them. And voila, you've achieved your own easy, gorgeous 'do!

Soft Chignon

Mena also created another easy, pretty updo for Fitness magazine: a soft chignon. He stresses that you shouldn't worry if you haven't tried this before, pointing out that chignons look more modern when they're slightly messy. "Don't stress if pieces fall or aren't perfectly placed; that's what makes the style so wearable," he says.

Adding texture to your hair is again the first step to this simple updo. Mena recommends spraying volumizer onto clean and dry hair roots, setting your hair using medium-size rollers, and then heating them with a blow dryer. Remove the rollers after 10 minutes and mist hair liberally with a light hair spray. Next, divide your hair into three even sections: two from hairline to crown, and the third from the crown to the back.

Tease the rear section of your hair, making sure to smooth any tangles with a paddle brush. Pull this section of hair into a low ponytail, wind the tail loosely around the elastic band, and pin the pieces of hair up, hiding the hairpins underneath your hair. Next, pull the right section of hair diagonally over the elastic band to the left side, rolling it under the bun and securing it firmly with pins. Repeat on the other side, this time pulling the left section over and under to the right.

Polished Ponytail

To create the polished ponytail hairstyle designed by Mena, first go a day or two without shampooing. "Natural oils at the roots help ground flyaways and make the knot-creating process easier," Mena says. You can run through a quick conditioning treatment ahead of time, however, since it will amp up shine and de-frizz hair.

Next, pull your hair back into a ponytail at the middle of your head, securing it with an elastic band. Spray lightweight shine spray onto the ponytail. Straighten the hair in the ponytail with a flat iron. Doing so will reduce bulk and make the next step much easier.

Make a loop in the ponytail and then make like you're tying a rope: pulling the ends through the loop. Push the knot upward toward the hair elastic band and pin it in place. You can then apply styling wax or shine spray to tame flyaway strands of hair.

Do Prom Hairstyles For Long Hair

High school proms are an American tradition many teenagers look forward to with great anticipation. Choosing a hairstyle can be a challenge, especially if you have long hair. The good news is that you have many options and trying dressy styles can be fun! Follow the steps below to create a beautiful prom hairstyle and beautiful prom pictures you'll cherish for many years.

Instructions

1. Try a classic updo. Blow dry your hair straight by pulling the hair taut and aiming the dryer down the hair shaft. Apply an anti-frizz serum. Brush your hair into a high ponytail and secure it with a hair elastic. Separate your ponytail into sections, each about one-inch wide. Hold a section of hair straight up toward the ceiling. Roll the hair down toward the head and secure it underneath with a bobby pin, creating a pretty roll on the crown of your head. Repeat, rolling sections different directions. Spray with a liberal amount of firm-hold hair spray. Apply shine serum.

2. Complement a strapless dress by leaving your hair down in loose waves. Wash and condition your hair. With the conditioner still in it, comb out the knots with a wide-tooth comb. Rinse. Scrunch your wet hair into your palm, and squeeze small sections up toward the roots, all the way around your head. Apply a small amount of mousse. Let your hair air dry. Once it's dry, roll one-inch sections around a one-and-a-half-inch curling iron. Hold for a few seconds before unwrapping. Use your fingers to separate the curls into loose waves and lightly sprtiz them with a lightweight hairspray.

3. Opt for a messy chignon. Pull all your hair into a loose ponytail at the nape of your neck. Pull the ends of the ponytail back through the hair elastic. To cover the hair elastic, wrap a random piece of hair around it and secure the hair with a bobby pin underneath. Pull a few tendrils out on either side of your face. Apply anti-frizz serum all over your head, including the tendrils, which you should scrunch into your palm to create very loose waves. Lightly spritz with hairspray.

4. Go for a sleek, stylish ponytail. Blow dry your hair straight, then liberally apply a shine serum. Pull all of your hair up into a tight ponytail at the crown of your head. Wrap a half-inch section of hair around the hair elastic, securing it with a bobby pin underneath the ponytail. Apply a smoothing gel of cream, and spray entire head with a medium-hold hairspray.

5. Sport a long, straight, and elegant look. Apply a liberal amount of straightening lotion, concentrating on the ends. Blow dry hair as in step one. Part your hair in the center or on one side. Quickly run a straightening iron over one-inch sections of your hair around your entire head. Run fingers through your hair, then spray it all over with a lightweight hairspray. Liberally apply a shine serum, concentrating on the ends.

Perms That Add Loose Waves

Create loose waves with a digital or wave perm.

Perms or permanent waves use chemicals to restructure hair bonds to make them curly or wavy. There are a variety techniques to perm hair, from wrapping hair around hot metal rods to wetting hair first in a chemical solution, then wrapping it into curlers for an extended period of time. Wave perms are a newer type of perm that creates loose curls or waves, which are curliest when the hair is wet, and lessen as hair becomes dry.

Digital Perms

Originally from Japan, digital perms have become popular hair styles for all different types of hair. Digital perms or Yuko perms use special rollers, which soften and recondition the hair, using thermal heat. The rollers are attached to wires that connect to a large digital machine, reminiscent of old perm machines from the 1960s. Hair is first shampooed and coated in a protective lotion and a hair relaxer, before it is wrapped in thermal rollers. The hair needs to be treated for at least 40 minutes for the hair bonds to be affected and for the hair to curl.

Setting Perms

A setting perm shares the same concept as a digital perm, except that instead of using the digital machine, the setting perm uses heat provided from a heating lamp. In Asia, setting perms dominated the market before digital perm technology was invented. Setting perms create waves that are slightly tighter and more defined than digital perm waves.

Hair Damage

Like most perms, wave perms may cause damage to the hair. The effects can vary from having fried or frizzy hair to under-curled hair. If you are considering a wave perm, you should have normal and healthy hair, that hasn't been permed in at least six months. You should also wait at least two weeks before coloring your hair to allow your perm to set.

Hair Care

After getting any kind of wave perm, you must not wash your hair for up to 48 hours, so the perming chemicals do not deactivate. After you wet your hair, you can either blow dry or blot dry your curls, but you should avoid brushing or combing to style. Apply curling balm or similar product to help maintain curl shape and texture. Depending on your hair type, wave perms can last anywhere form three months to a year.

Make Curly Hair Last Through Homecoming

Bring hairspray with you to apply during the evening if your hair falls loose.

Having a beautiful, curled hairstyle will make you feel elegant. However, if you've spent hours curling your hair for an event like a homecoming dance, you want to make sure the curls last all night long. In order to make your curls last, you must apply a generous amount of hairspray. When hairspray dries, it holds the hair strands together and makes the curls maintain their shape. Apply the hairspray to the hair once you've already curled your hair for the best holding effect.

Instructions

1. Hold the hairspray can a foot away from the curls. Hairspray is designed to keep the strands from sticking together but, if you hold the can too close, the spray will be thick and will cake onto the hair too much.

2. Press the button on the top of the can to release the hairspray. Spray in a constant stream all over the head to cover every single curl.

3. Allow the hairspray time to dry and apply a second layer of hairspray to ensure the curls don't budge an inch.

Difference Between Indoor & Outdoor Tanning Lotions

Difference Between Indoor & Outdoor Tanning Lotions

According to the Master Tanning Website, tanning lotions typically contains a special moisturizer that helps your skin during the tanning process and afterward. Although both lotions are used for the same purpose, an indoor lotion should not be used outdoors, and an outdoor lotion should not be used indoors.

Indoor Tanning

Indoor tanning beds primarily have UVA rays that are manufactured. The rays are in a controlled environment.

Outdoor Tanning

Outdoor tanning relies on natural UVA and UVB rays from the sun. They are not in a controlled environment.

Indoor Lotion

An indoor tanning lotion assists with tanning in a tanning bed. If the lotion contains sunscreen, it can help with preventing a sunburn while at the same time allowing the skin to tan.

Outdoor Lotion

Outdoor tanning lotions typically have sunscreen in them, which can help protect against the dangerous UVB rays that are produced by the sun. Indoor tanning lotions don't always have sunscreen in them, so they are not recommended for use outdoors.

Warning

Outdoor tanning lotions should not be used for indoor tanning, because the outdoor lotion can make a film on the tanning bed's acrylic, thus inhibiting the tanning process.

Make A Small Braid Stay Without A Hairbow

Hold small braids in place with rubber bands.

When you braid your hair, you must secure the braid on the end to keep it from unraveling. One way to do this is to tie a piece of ribbon or string in a bow around the bottom of the braid. If you don't have ribbon or string, you can use a rubber band. Visit a drugstore or beauty supply store to find a variety of small rubber bands in various colors and look for a slick no-pull band for tangle-free removal.

Instructions

1. Hold onto the end of the braid with one hand.

2. Slip the end of the braid into an unstretched rubber band.

3. Press one side of the rubber band against your braid to hold it in place. With the other hand, stretch the rubber band away from your hair and twist it 180 degrees. It will look like a figure 8.

4. Slip the loop you just twisted around the braid again. You will now have two loops of rubber band around your hair.

5. Continue pulling the band away from the braid, twisting the band and slipping the twisted portion over the braid with one hand, while still holding the braid with the other hand. When you can't stretch the band any more, your braid is secure and will stay.

Prepare For A Child'S Pageant

Prepare for a Child's Pageant

If your child is about to do her first pageant, there are several things you should know beforehand. While these tips will not guarantee that your child will win the pageant, following these tips can help you to avoid mistakes.

Instructions

1. Read all rules and regulations for the pageant. In your introductory information or pageant package, you will find a list of rules, regulations and requirements. This information will tell you everything from what is required in a pageant wardrobe, the height of shoes, makeup rules, as well as other suggestions and restrictions. Failure to read these rules can cause you to make a mistake such as have a talent routine that is too long, or wearing gloves when none are allowed.

2. Choose the best wardrobe. An expensive wardrobe is not the key to finding the best wardrobe. Instead, you need to make sure that the clothing meets the pageant restrictions for age appropriateness, that it is a good color for the child, and that it fits her well. Clothing needs to be altered for best fit a week or two before the pageant.

3. Practice, practice, practice. Beginning two or three months before the pageant, have a short but focused practice session. Children may need to memorize their introduction. They may need to learn their talent. They may need to make a speech. Daily practice will help them perfect their routine or speech. The child should also practice posture, speaking clearly and looking people in the eye when they speak.

4. Being in the best physical shape possible for her age and body makeup. While you don’t want to give a child a complex about her size or shape, she needs to be physically active and healthy to compete in a pageant. Most pageants require a dance number or other routine that involves some degree of stamina. She will need to be able to keep up with the other children.

5. Spend some time with a pageant coach. Pageant coaches can give your child a lot of information and tips that are specific to that child. Whether your daughter has three hours to spend with a pageant coach (as it can be costly) or whether they spend a great deal of time being coached, getting focused attention from someone who has been in the business and knows how it works is invaluable.

Each year, the opportunity arises to give your husband the perfect wedding anniversary gift. This gift must be sentimental yet practical to provide a present your husband will use all year long. Many wives grow overwhelmed while perusing stores and searching for a gift that expresses their love in a way their husband will appreciate. Gifts of jewelry offer a classic token of your adoration that he can enjoy.

Cuff Links

Bring classic charm to your husband's business attire by gifting him with a rare pair of cuff links for your anniversary. The possibilities for this gift of jewelry are endless. Watches

The watch on a man's wrist continues to define his personal style. The watch you choose could be platinum with a jet-black face, gold-tone with diamond accents, cross-embossed brown leather with a stainless steel case, or a trendy leather cuff with a digital display. Depending on his hobbies, your husband's perfect match could be found in a sleek diver's watch, a luxurious dress watch or a high-tech sport watch. Another thoughtful idea for the perfect anniversary gift for your husband lies in the jewelry department's selection of necklaces and rings. Necklace selection varies as widely as the personality of each man. Your necklace choices range from organic leather and earthy beads to posh gold and luxurious platinum. You can keep it simple and give your husband a silver chain or add personality and give him a chain with a charm or pendant hanging from it.

Your ring selection ranges from understated wooden bands to ornate diamond rings. You can choose a ring for your man's pinky, thumb or right ring finger. For an affordable and stylish accessory, give your husband a modern titanium or tungsten ring.

Types Of Haircuts For Teenage Girls

Year after year, some teen hairstyles are always popular.

Whether it is the pixy, the shag or the Aniston, there is always something new and popular in the world of hair. This is especially true for teenagers. Haircuts for teens come and go as quickly as their favorite pair of jeans. However, there are a few haircuts that seem to outlive all the fashion trends and still continue to keep up with the latest styles.

The Bob

This bob is longer in the front and shorter in the back.

The bob is one hairstyle that never goes out of style. Hairstyle Magazine dates the bob back to the early 1920s and still going strong. There are many different versions of the bob. There is the long bob, the chin-length bob, the layered bob and the a-line bob, just to name a few. The bob is a terrific hairstyle because it offers a ton of versatility. A bob can be styled for a classic look one day and a trendy look the next. The bob also works well as a medium between what some might consider a frightening transition of going from long hair to short hair. One of the best features about a bob is that this style tends to work well with any type of face, whereas some styles are only suitable for oval or round faces. However, because there are so many versions of this haircut, this scenario does not ring true with the bob.

Layered to a Tee

According to the website JustAboutHair.com, adding layers is a popular idea for teens who have either long or short hair and just want something different. This type of haircut offers a change in style without giving up much length. At the same time, layers introduce a whole new variety of style. Every teen is different, and choosing a haircut to match each teen will depend on these differences. A teen who is more into punk may want choppy layers for a more wild, punk look, while a teen that is more reserved might want layers that are softer for a more maintained look.

Short and Spiky

For teen girls that really want to make a statement, there is the option of a short and spiky cut. This type of haircut is also sometimes known as the pixie. Short and spiky cuts are often associated with a punk lifestyle, but short and spiky can be extremely chic and classy at the same time. GoodHousekeeping.com says "the pixie haircut takes guts but the payoff is how well it shows off your face." This hairstyle does require quite a bit of maintenance, but everyday styling is quick and simple. Short bangs are really popular with ultra short hair, and hair can be styled spiky with hair products or soft and classic without.

Shave Your Face Without Cutting Yourself

Shave Your Face Without Cutting Yourself

Cutting your face while shaving is an annoying consequence of male grooming. The good news is that with a few precautions you can minimize the number of cuts you receive.

Instructions

1. Buy a high quality razor blade and replace your blade often. A sharper blade will allow you to get a close shave without discomfort. If the blade is too dull, your skin can get irritated, and you won't be able to get a close shave.

2. Apply shaving cream to your face and the top part of your neck.

3. Begin shaving with downward strokes starting at the top of your beard line. Do not push too hard on the skin or shave too quickly, or you may cut yourself.

4. Rinse your razor blade with warm water every few strokes. This cleans your razor blade and helps achieve a close shave.

5. Avoid shaving over your acne. Wait until the acne heals before you shave over it.

6. Wash your face with a towel to remove any excess shaving cream. Apply aftershave.

Make Long Layers Look Piecey

Using pomade can help you accomplish the piecey look with your long layers.

In order to accomplish the sexy piecey look with your hair, you must first make sure you have the right cut for it. Long layers are essential to accomplishing this look. Having your stylist add body to your hair by texturizing it will also help make it much easier. This will lighten the ends of the hair and add thickness to the roots, allowing more lift at the crown of your head. You must also purchase a pomade to use, for styling at home.

Instructions

1. Apply a pea-sized amount of pomade to your fingertips. Rub your fingertips around to help spread the product.

2. Work the pomade directly into wet or dry hair. Avoid placing the product up towards the crown of your head.

3. Using your fingertips, gently shape the pieces of your hair. Pull a few pieces towards the front of your face. Twist other pieces between your fingers. Direct them to fall the way you wish.

4. Finish the look by applying a light application of finishing spray to your hair.

Normal Bun & Creatinine Levels

Normal BUN & Creatinine Levels

Creatinine and BUN tests are performed to measure renal function, filtration and over all organ health. These 2 tests, along with the creatinine clearance test, are very closely related and will help the healthcare professional understand the functional status of multiple organ systems.

They are easy and inexpensive tests to perform and frequently part of a normal blood screening.

What is BUN?

BUN stands for Blood Urea Nitrogen. It is an indirect and rough measurement of renal (kidney) and liver function, measuring the amount of urea nitrogen in the blood. (Urea is formed in the liver as the end product of protein metabolism and digestion.)

During ingestion, protein is broken down into amino acids. In the liver these amino acids are catabolized and ammonia is formed. All the ammonia molecules combine to form urea, which is then deposited in the blood and transported to the kidneys for excretion.

BUN is directly related to the metabolic function of the liver and excretory function of the kidney. Patients who have elevated BUN levels are said to have azotemia, or be azotemic.

What is Creatinine?

Creatinine tests diagnose impaired renal function and measures the amount of creatine phosphate in the blood. Creatine phosphate is used as part of skeletal muscle contraction; its daily production depends on muscle mass. Once creatine is used by the muscles it becomes creatinine and is excreted by the kidneys as BUN.

With normal kidney function, serum creatine levels should remain constant. Only in renal disorders will creatinine be abnormally elevated.

Normal levels

Normal levels of BUN are between 10 to 20 mg/dL for an adult and 5 to 18 mg/dL for a child. Normal creatinine levels are between .5 to 1.1 mg/dL for an adult female and .6 to 1.2 mg/dL for an adult male. Creatinine levels are lower in young children and the elderly as a result of reduced muscle mass.

Creatinine Clearance

Another test that often accompanies creatinine and BUN tests, is creatinine clearance. This test measures the number of milliliters of filtrate made by the kidneys per minute, called GFR. Urine and serum creatinine levels are assessed and the clearance rate is calculated.

Creatinine clearance can help clarify the extent of kidney damage and if one or both kidneys are diseased. As with creatinine, creatinine clearance is slightly lower in children and the elderly. The normal adult male can expect a range between 107 to 139 mL/min and the adult female between 87 to 107 mL/min.

Results

As mentioned, increased creatinine levels can indicate a disease affecting renal function. It can also indicate acromegaly, gigantism or any other disease that would be associated with increased muscle mass, causing normal creatinine levels to be elevated. Decreased levels normally indicate muscle atrophy.

Increased BUN levels can indicate many more pathologies, such as shock, dehydration, congestive heart failure or even starvation. Decreased levels of BUN might be a sign of liver failure or pregnancy.

Short Natural Prom Hairstyles

Shorter hairstyles on prom night are easy to maintain and comfortable.

Girls who sport short hairdos have many options on prom night. A no-nonsense bob can be altered to fit a teen-age girl's mood and personality on her special night. Spiked bangs are popular enhancements to short hair, and hot rollers add bouncy waves to shorter styles. The advantage to choosing short prom hairstyles over longer locks is that the shorter shapes are easier to manage and comfortable, says All Hairstyles Haircuts website.

Bobs

A standard bob can be cut evenly across or angled. The shape of a girl's face dictates whether she should wear the even look or opt for the angular cut, says All Hairstyles Haircuts site. An even cut is most effective with thin faces, whereas the angled look works best with round faces. A popular variation is the flip-out bob with edges that turn out instead of the traditional bob with ends that turn under. With a flip-out variation, the sides can be secured behind the ears with pins. Or, sweep your flat-style bangs to the side to frame your face. Hair bands add a touch of elegance to the bob hairdos. Jewelry---such as a classy brooch---also energizes the look.

Spike

Short-haired gals with thick tresses that have volume are good candidates for the style known as tall and funky, says Beauty-And-The-Bath website. To start, use a hairdryer to blow the bangs upward and then apply hot rollers to the bangs. With your hair still in rollers, dab on some sculpting gel. Remove the rollers when they have cooled and gently tease your bangs so they stay upward. Beauty-And-The-Bath website suggests working with the bangs so they tilt backward a little bit. Spritz with some hairspray, and your spiky hairdo is complete.

Waves

Wavy short hair is back in vogue after achieving popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, says Beauty-And-The-Bath website. The first steps are to shampoo and condition your hair, apply mousse and then blow dry your short tresses. Part your hair to the right side, apply hot rollers and spritz with a smoothing shine conditioner. Remove the hot rollers when they have cooled. Add hairspray to secure your hairdo. Or, to intensify the volume of your short hair, use a diffuser on your hair dryer after you have applied conditioning mousse and sculpting gel. Apply special wax that is intended for the ends of hair. Next, hold your hairstyle together with hairspray.

Special Cuts

Some girls prefer shorter maintenance-free haircuts that don't require any fuss on prom night. For example, the comb-down hairstyle is shorter in the front and the back of the head but longer on both sides of the face. All a girl has to do is comb her hair down on all sides of her head, and the haircut does the rest. Another choice is the close-cropped look known as a boy cut. However, the Short Hairstyle Cuts website cautions that this very short hairstyle works best on girls with very delicate and distinctive facial features like actress Natalie Portman. "It gives a certain charm to girls who can carry it well," according to the website.

Find A Modest Prom Dress

Find a Modest Prom Dress

You can be beautiful at your prom without feeling like you're showing too much skin. Companies are starting to recognize the need for modest dresses, as more and more styles become inappropriately revealing. With so many dresses that are strapless, low cut or backless, it can be time consuming to find a modest one. Follow these tips and you'll be able to find the perfect prom dress.

Instructions

1. Find a dress or bridal shop. Look in the phone book or ask older students where they went to buy their prom dress.

2. Consider shopping online. Even brides are getting their dresses through websites now. There are companies that advertise modest prom dresses.

3. Set a price limit before you even get to the store. It will help you stick to your budget without breaking the bank.

4. Decide what kind of dress you'd like to wear. Look through the racks for dresses that offer more coverage. You may opt for a dress with a shrug or one with cap sleeves. Look for varying lengths, too, like tea-length or those with a small train.

5. Try on as many dresses as you need to until you find the right one. Since you'll want to avoid form-fitting dress, opt for A-line instead. It flares out at the waist and is the most flattering kind of dress on most body types.

6. Show your parents, date or friends if you want a second opinion. Buy it once you're sure it's the one.

7. Schedule alterations a few weeks before the prom, if needed. Allow ample time to get them done.

Put In A Hair Texturizer

Hair texturizers are ideal for those who want to add some definition and reduce frizz to their very curly hair, or else to relax extremely springy hair. A texturizer can also help greatly increase the manageability of your hair. They are best applied by a professional stylist, since they will know exactly how much to apply, and what to do for your type of hair texture and length.

Instructions

1. Put on the latex gloves for protection and better grip.

2. Start at the nape of your neck, and apply a thick amount of the texturizing paste around the hairline from the nape of your neck, to up behind your ears, to the hairline around your face. Keep it 1/4 inch from your hairline so it doesn't rest on the skin.

3. Use your hands and the wide tooth comb to brush the paste through and over your hair, down to the tips. If the paste runs thin, add more and brush it out to distribute it evenly. Generally, you want to apply the paste or cream in the direction that you want the hair to fall.

4. Decide if you want to use the texturizer to make your hair very straight, or if you just want to define curls. If you want it very straight, take the flat board and lay it under your hair, firmly placing it at the nape of the neck. Lean your head back and brush the hair out onto the flat board to straighten it out completely. When it is brushed out completely, flip over the comb and use the back of it to slide over the hair downwards, squeezing out the excess product.

5. Repeat this procedure in sections until all of your hair is completely straight with minimal product left in it, making it appear very shiny and flat. This helps create very straight hair with the texturizer paste or cream.

Athome Permanent Hair Removal

There are many types of hair-removal kits that you can purchase to remove unwanted hair at home. Some of the most popular forms of home hair removal include waxing, tweezing, depilatory creams and electrolysis. While all methods are effective at removing hair, only one can be considered permanent: electrolysis. Electrolysis prevents hair from growing back by destroying the hair follicle with an electrical current and you can do this procedure at home.

Selection

Machine selection is extremely important if you want to perform quality electrolysis treatments at home. Never buy the cheapest machine you can find without performing some research. Most home machines can be purchased for $100 to $200. Look for machines that are easy to use and highly effective at permanently removing hair. If a particular machine has more settings than you need, you can purchase a base model. Normally, a base model will be cheaper that an electrolysis machine complete with all the bells and whistles.

Getting Started

Read all of the instructions and warnings that come with your machine before you begin an electrolysis treatment. You will be directing electrical impulses into the follicles of your skin; proper technique is of vital importance. People with heart problems, epilepsy, skin conditions, open sores or wounds and diabetes are discouraged from performing electrolysis at home. Never use an electrolysis machine if you have electrical components in your body such as a pace maker.

Before you begin, make sure that you have all of the supplies that you need including cotton swabs, conductivity gel, a warm washcloth and a vanity mirror. A mirror that also acts as a magnifier usually works best as it will help you see fine hairs that you would not ordinarily see with a regular mirror.

Electrolysis Treatment

After your device is charged and ready to go, you can begin treatment. Most machines have a grounding strap that needs to be attached to you. Make sure you have attached the ground properly before proceeding to the next step.

In your kit, you will find a cream or gel used to enhance conductivity. Apply the cream evenly to the surface of the skin using a cotton ball or Q-tip. Check the machine's setting to ensure that it is set according to your unique skin and hair type. If you are a first-time user, start out with a lower setting until you see how your skin reacts to the treatment.

Home electrolysis is much like tweezing. First, grasp each individual hair that needs to be removed with the electrolysis tweezers. The current will activate as soon as you close the tweezers. After a predetermined amount of time, the machine will make a noise to inform you that the proper amount of time has passed. Tweeze the treated hair before moving onto the next hair.

Work in small sections from left to right. If your skin becomes irritated, move to a different spot. It may take several home electrolysis treatments to permanently remove all unwanted hair.

Do It Yourself Hairstyles For Shoulder Length Hair

Shoulder length hair is not only one of the most popular cuts but also allows for versatile styling for casual or formal looks. Hair that is medium in length also calls for easier styling, since it will be more voluminous naturally without excess bulk pulling down a style.

Layers

Those with medium, shoulder-length hair can opt to have layers cut throughout to offer volume and texture. Layers work best with face shapes that are heart, square or oval since they frame the bone structure. To get layers from the stylist, ask for blunt layers spread throughout the hair with bangs that hit around the cheekbone.

To style shoulder length hair with layers yourself, use a serum that protects strands from heat and blow-dry layers with a paddle brush. This will give you a sleek look, since round brushes create volume. With shoulder length hair, be careful not to create too much volume because the hair will appear shorter.

Sleek Bob

One of the most popular styles for medium length hair is a sleek bob. Unlike a shorter bob, a shoulder length version that has side-swept bangs, flattering to all facial types. Avoid having the hair cut close to the chin, since that will make the face appear rounder than it is.

Ask a stylist to bob the hair shoulder length, and keep bangs at the chin to prevent the look from appearing boxy. To keep up the look at home, apply a serum to the hair to enhance shine, and flat iron for a sleek look.

Formal Looks

For those nights out, a classic hairstyle keeps it classy and easy to do at home. Large curls spread throughout the hair give it volume, and may be done on any type of haircut. To create a simple look at home, place large barrel curlers around the crown of the head and around the nape. Let cool for approximately 30 minutes, and then take out the curlers. Run your fingers through the hair to loosen curls and brush out bangs to make them lie flat. Spray the curls with a light misting of hairspray for hold.

Eighth Grade Graduation Ceremony Ideas

Regardless of the age, graduations mark movement into an unknown future.

Graduation from middle school into junior high marks an important part of the transition into adulthood. While high school graduation celebrates a student's completion of basic education and introduces her into a world of adult decisions and growth, graduation from eighth grade celebrates your child's journey through the middle years of education and prepares her for exploring her passions.

High School Induction

Use the middle school graduation to get students excited about making high-school decisions, such as course selection. High school lays the foundation for an adult life. Choices in high school determine college eligibility; an art college aspirant needs to develop a portfolio by the end of high school, a musician-in-training needs to study music.

Invite the band and orchestra to play different songs for the graduating students. Decorate the walls of the auditorium or gymnasium with paintings and photographs from art students. Create a booth where science-loving students can share their work with next year's freshmen.

Memory Slide Show

Because most matriculating eighth graders no longer attend the same school in ninth grade, create a memory slide show that encapsulates the three previous years. Include teachers, classrooms and student activities. Incorporate a narrative about events, both positive and negative, that affected the students and the world. Show pictures that celebrate the students' ability to overcome adversity; include slides of charitable actions within the community or world.

Enlist the photography club to put together the slide show, or if your middle school has a strong art program, enlist the artists to draw caricatures of memories.

Time Capsule Graduation

Create a time capsule for future generations at the graduation. Each graduating eighth-grader includes advice for future generations of middle-school students. The teachers read over the advice to make sure that everything is "PG," and the students insert their advice into a container that is sealed. In 10, 20 or even 50 years, share the advice with an incoming class of middle-school students.

If your students don't change schools between eighth grade and high school, try this: Instead of advice, you could instruct your students to place messages to their older selves, and open the capsule at the high-school graduation ceremony.

Perm Advice For Black Hair

Perm Advice for Black Hair

Getting a perm can be very damaging to the hair. Perms involve the use of chemicals that change the natural hair structure. Perms refer to either permanently relaxing hair or curing hair. However, since many black women's hair strands are already very curly, this article will primarily discuss perms that straighten or relax the hair. Since a black woman's hair is more fragile, drier and more prone to breakage than other types of hair, there are many things that must be done to ensure that you do not cause damage.

About Perms

Perms are primarily done to make the hair easier to style. However, perms are very hard on the hair and require a lot of work to keep the hair looking and feeling healthy. There are several rules that you must follow when getting a perm. First you should assess your hair's condition and perform an allergy test with the chemicals that are going to be used to make sure that they do not cause an allergic reaction. You can test for damage by snipping a single strand of hair and placing it into a glass of water. If the strand floats it is healthy, but if it sinks to the bottom it is damaged. If hair is damaged you should not perm it because it will cause extreme breakage.

Advice

A big rule to follow when it comes to perms is that you must never perm hair that is colored, but you may color hair that is permed. You should also not perm hair that has just come out of extensions or braids because the extensions and braids cause damage to certain parts of the hair and if the perm chemicals are applied to the hair it can cause hot spots and breakage. If you are going to keep your hair short you may make your hair bone straight by removing all of the curl. However, you should not make you hair bone straight if it is long, because the hair will not have any body to it. After hair has been permed, you should invest in a good shampoo with gentle cleansers, and a conditioner with low pH. You should try to wet your hair about twice a week and then towel blot it and apply hair and scalp oil. You should then let your hair air dry as long as possible and then use low heat to finish drying it. You can then apply a daily leave-in conditioner or moisturizing pomade to use after hair has been washed and dried to provide it with moisture and continue to style it as normal.

Treat Damaged Black Hair With Home Remedies & Natural Products

Damaged black hair can be treated with home remedies and natural products

Excessive perming and hair coloring and prolonged exposure to heat from styling tools can damage African-American hair. In addition, tight rubber bands or other hair accessories can cause breakage. Home remedies and natural products can help heal damaged hair.

Instructions

1. Apply coconut, almond or olive oil to your scalp. This is one of the best methods to treat damaged and dry hair and keep it moisturized.

2. Use eggs or mayonnaise treatments to strengthen and moisturize damaged hair. Combine two eggs and a half cup of honey in a small bowl and apply throughout your freshly-shampooed hair. Leave in for 30 minutes and rinse and shampoo. For a mayonnaise treatment, coat from roots to the hair ends and massage well. Leave in your hair for 30 minutes and rinse and shampoo.

3. Heat cocoa butter in the microwave and apply to the roots of your hair. Then let the cocoa butter stay in your hair 10 minutes before shampooing and conditioning. This treatment restores natural luster to damaged hair.

Glamour Hairstyles For Short Hair

When looking for a glamorous hairstyle for a special occasion, the best place to go is the red carpet. Celebrities are increasingly wearing their hair shorter, thanks to the flexibility a short cut provides. A short hairstyle, with very little care, can appear both glamorous and casual, depending on the setting. If you are looking for a short style, consider a few looks sported by these celebrities.

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham has made glamor her signature to the point that when she was singing with the Spice girls, she adopted the moniker "Posh Spice." These days, she's dyed her dark locks blonde and sports an asymmetrical cut, with side-swept bangs that blend into chin-length layers, and a short, clipped and textured back. Victoria created this look to help her husband launch a line of fragrance.

Natalie Portman

While Natalie has worn some odd hairstyles in her role as Queen Padme for the "Star Wars" franchise, she created a buzz while filming "V for Vendetta" due to her shaved head. Since then, she's sported a close-cropped pixie cut that showcases her features. The pixie cut is an ideal look for women who have thin hair. Add volumizing mousse to wet hair and follow up with a light shaping spray.

Amy Lee

The lead singer of Evanescence has been known for her Goth hair: long, flowing, curly black locks. Recently, she shocked her fans by shearing off all of those curls for a short curly bob that is reminiscent of the 1920's flapper look. A number of celebrities with longer hair have recently emulated this style by pinning their longer hair into a low updo with curls.

Katie Holmes

Since becoming linked to Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes has become a trend setter. Holmes favors shiny, sleek bobs that vary from ear to chin length. This style can have flippy ends or sleek, face hugging locks, a side part and a thick fringe of bangs.

Selma Blair

This actress is best known for her supporting role in the science fiction film "Hellboy." Selma sports a short, beveled cut with angled, side-swept bangs. Where short cuts can appear masculine, the beveled cut softens the edges and makes this cut look feminine.

Christiana Ricci

In addition to her acting talent, Christina Ricci is known for her fearlessness in changing hair color and shape. Some of Christina's hairstyles have been emulated by teens looking for a Goth appearance. These days, Christina Ricci is sporting golden brown straight hair in a chin-length. Ricci frequently disguises her wider forehead with thick bangs.

Put Olive Oil In Your Hair

Olive oil is a fruit oil that comes from ground, pressed olives from trees that grow in a Mediterranean climate. Although it is most commonly used as a cooking product (due to its high content of monounsaturated, heart-healthy fats), olive oil has numerous household uses ranging from cosmetics and cleaning products to pharmaceuticals and fuels. It is the natural cleaning and moisturizing qualities of olive oil that also make it a great hair conditioner.

Function

Olive oil is most frequently used as a cooking ingredient but serves great purpose as a hair product as well. The natural oil adds extra moisture, helping to prevent frizz, sooth split ends and treat dandruff. It works well on all hair types, but is especially beneficial for providing a sleek look for over-processed and mixed race hair.

Massage into hair (wet or dry) and cover with a shower cap for about 20 to 30 minutes, rinse out and shampoo as normal. Do not follow with conditioner. Repeat about once a week.

Features

Olive oil is a natural emollient with cleaning characteristics. These traits make it a great alternative to conditioner because it adds extra moisture and soothing elements without any scents or additives. The rich content of monounsaturated fats makes olive oil a healthy ingredient for your heart, your skin and your hair, leaving you looking silky, smooth from head to toe.

Benefits

Hair is often mistreated and exposed to harsh elements, both man-made and weather-related, and using olive oil is a quick way to treat your damaged hair. Hair becomes brittle and breaks when its colored, blow-dried, scorched in the sun, pulled and pinned or dried out in the winter weather - olive oil will cure weak hair. Conditioning with olive oil is a natural way to return extra moisture to the scalp, adding strength to your hair, treating dandruff and sealing split ends.

Geography

Olive trees and olive oil production dates back thousands of years in regions bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Production continues to be predominantly located in Spain, Italy, Turkey and Greece. Although the United States is among the top consumers of the oil, it has not made its mark as a top producer.

Today, olive oil remains a representation of nutrition and versatility, a part of daily life, but it has been a symbol for family, peace, religion, nourishment and health throughout many different cultures, over many different years.

Potential

The possibilities are extraordinary for the potential of olive oil. It has been a common product dating back before the Greek and Roman times and the versatility of the oil within cosmetic, nutritional, pharmaceutical, cleaning and culinary uses only further proves its solidity as a staple for human use. Olive oil can be used to fuel oil lamps, to clean muddy gardening tools and improve the health of cats (add a drop to their food) - as time goes by, more and more uses will emerge.

African Hairstyles For Men

The sculptured shave.

People of African descent tend to have coarse, very curly hair that's flattered by specific hairstyles. This has been especially difficult for men. For the longest time, men of African descent were limited either to plain cropped hair or flamboyant styles associated with rap, reggae or ethnic African tribesmen.

But at the turn of the 21st century, much has changed. Forget the hair-raising afro-halo, long Jheri curls, cornrows or the "hi-top fade." According to AskMen Online Magazine, today's African hairstyles ideas for men are modern, sophisticated, and can suit a wider range of personalities.

Classic Cut

This style is best exemplified by acclaimed actor Denzel Washington. Hair is cut to a length and volume that adds to or flatters the overall shape of the skull, yet is short enough to remain unaffected by wind or movement. This hairstyle suits conservative, traditional personalities.

Sculptured Shave

This is the black man's military buzz cut, except it's got a highly-sculptured hairline. You get the same freedom associated with going bald, while still having hair that can go anywhere from red carpet to street. This will suit men who want to look like a fashionable rake, without the fuss.

You'll need a skilled barber to get this suave hairstyle. The key is in getting an even close shave throughout your head, and in shaving a sharp, well-defined hairline to frame your face shape properly. For a good example, see Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx.

360 Waves

This hairstyle literally forms a visible pattern of close-cropped, tight, uniform waves and ridges of hair around the head. This is achieved through the aid of special pomades, brushing and sleeping in a special wave cap or "durag." Dramatic without being over the top, this hairdo is best for men a casual, more flamboyant personality. One of the best proponents of this hairstyle is American rapper Nelly.

Mini-'Fro

This is literally the much shorter, toned-down version of the '70s disco afro. It may look casual, but it requires careful cutting and styling for hair to achieve the same rebellious stand, without making a mess. Rock singer Lenny Kravitz sports this hairstyle. To make this look work, it's best to pair it with a trendy wardrobe--perfect for a stylish, risk-taking man.

Short Dreads

If you like the bravado of Jamaican dreadlocks, but hate long unkempt hair, you can try "short dreads" instead. Just like the Bob Marley hairdo of old, hair is sectioned off into locks, and allowed to grow. But instead of a long mane, hair is grown to only a few inches off the scalp, creating a subtle shock of locks. You can take your inspiration from singer and guitarist Kele Okereke of the British music group Bloc Party, who wears this hairdo with style. This look is best for laid-back, urban hipsters.

What To Wear When Going To A Luau

Traditionally, a luau is a Hawaiian feast featuring entertainment such as hula dancers and music. These days, just about anyone visiting the Hawaiian islands can get in on the Polynesian celebration at commercial luaus. If you're one of many tourists who are new to this type of party, you may be asking yourself just dress for the occasion. Going along with the relaxed, "hang loose" spirit of Hawaii, the answer is almost anything, as long as you are comfortable in it.

Instructions

1. Consider the weather conditions at the luau you'll be attending. Though most Polynesian islands where authentic luaus take place have mild to hot weather, temperatures can drop at night and there may be unexpected rainfall. So don't forget to bring along a light sweater or jacket.

2. Decide whether you want to go the more touristy, yet fun, route of dressing in "aloha wear." This includes short-sleeved, button-up Hawaiian shirts and shorts, khakis or white pants for men and Hawaiian muumuu dresses for women (see Resources for examples). To complete this look, opt for either a flower or kukui nut lei or bracelets.

3. Wear a comfortable summer outfit that you'd wear to an event other than a luau. This might be a sundress or a flowery white skirt and top for women, while men might opt for cargo or board shorts and a T-shirt. Keep up with the Hawaiian theme by placing a flower in your hair or wearing a traditional Polynesian sarong as a wraparound skirt.

4. Put on sandals or other comfortable, breathable footwear before you head out for the night. Luaus are traditionally outdoors, and are oftentimes at the beach, so you'll be better off wearing casual shoes you can easily kick off and that won't sink into the grass or sand.

Tighten The Upper Arms

Push-ups can help tighten your arms.

Tighten your arms by performing a combination of strength exercises to increase muscular definition and active mobility exercises to improve their range of motion. Since your upper arms, which are made up of your biceps, triceps, and several other minor muscles, are connected to your shoulder girdle and your lower arms, you should perform a combination of isolation exercises that focuses on your arms and integration exercises that integrates movement for both your arms and the rest of your body, according to the National Academy of Sports Medicine. These exercises can help you improve total-body function and tighten your arms and your body together.

Instructions

Standing Curl and Press

1. Stand with your legs about shoulder-width apart. Hold a 20-lb. dumbbell in each hand by your sides with your hands facing forward.

2. Exhale and curl your arms up to your shoulders. Press the weights smoothly over your head with your knuckles facing to the sides of your body. Tighten your buttocks to maintain your posture and do not arch your lower back.

3. Lower the weights to your shoulders and back to the starting position in one smooth movement pattern. Perform three sets of 10 to 12 reps.

Pull-ups

4. Stand beneath a pull-up bar or a similar parallel bar that is about 2 feet above your head. Jump up and grab the bar with both hands about shoulder-width apart with your hands facing you or away from you.

5. Exhale and pull yourself up until your head clears over the bar. Do not stick your neck forward.

6. Inhale and lower your body down until your arms are fully extended. Perform three sets of 8 to 12 reps.

Push-ups

7. Put your hands on the ground about shoulder-width apart and your legs together on your toes.

8. Tighten your buttocks and lower your body down until your hip and chest almost touch the ground.

9. Exhale and push yourself up while keeping your head in alignment with your spine and hip. Perform three sets of 10 to 12 reps.

Give Yourself A Root Perm

Perms can create bouncy curls.

A perm, or permanent wave, is a process that creates curls in your hair. There are several methods of perm kits. A root perm kit is applied to the roots of the hair to form curls. While perms are popular among some women, perm kits require careful diligence. Applying a perm incorrectly can lead to hair loss and severe hair damage.

Instructions

1. Wash your hair with shampoo before getting started. Apply a deep conditioner after washing your hair. Allow your hair to dry completely.

2. Comb your hair until it is straight and tangle-free. Depending on what kind of hair you have, you may not be able to get your hair straight so settle for relaxing it as much as possible.

3. Part your hair into at least four sections. If you are using a permanent wave kit, apply curlers to your hair to create the desired wave look. If you are using a relaxer kit, allow your hair to remain in parts.

4. Apply petroleum jelly around the base of your hairline to protect your face and ears from the perm solution.

5. Combine the ingredients of the perm solution according to the instructions on the box. The perm solution likely consists of a perming gel and an acid to activate the perming chemicals.

6. Apply the perm solution to the roots of your hair at end of the four sections. Apply the perm solution evenly to your hair roots.

7. Allow the perm solution to sit in your hair for the amount of time indicated in the instructions. If you notice a burning sensation on your scalp, wash the solution from your hair immediately.

8. Wash the perm solution from your hair. If you are using a permanent wave kit, allow the curlers to remain in your hair. Apply the perm neutralizer to the roots of your hair. Apply the neutralizer evenly. Allow the neutralizer to sit in your hair for the amount of time indicated in the instructions.

9. Wash the neutralizer from your hair using cold water. Remove the curlers from your hair. Blot your hair gently with a towel. Do not apply heat to your hair to dry. Allow your hair to air dry completely.
