Create An Easy Updo For Long Straight Hair

An updo allows long hair to be styled a different way.

An updo is a type of hairstyle that, through the use of curling, twisting and pinning, is generally designed to keep the hair above the neckline. Updos are generally created for events such as parties and weddings; but for women with long hair, they can also be useful when working out, sleeping or during hot, humid weather. An updo for long hair takes only a few tools and can be completed in a few steps.

Instructions

1. Brush the hair, making sure it is tangle-free, using a sculpting brush. The hair needs to be completely dry. Apply a small amount of styling cream to the hair. Start at the ends and work it thoroughly through the hair.

2. Comb out any tangles using a detangling comb. Brush your hair again.

3. Section the hair to be curled into horizontal 1-inch sections, beginning at the nape of the neck and moving upward, using a regular comb and hair clips.

4. Curl the hair into spiral curls with a curling iron. Start from the lower-hair sections and move horizontally.

5. Create three large barrel curls, going from front to back, on top of the head using the curling iron.

6. Blend the sections together with teasing comb to eliminate section lines. Apply a light mist of hair spray.

7. Tease the two barrel curls directly behind the front barrel curl for lift. Gently unroll the front barrel curl, lay it over the other two barrel curls, and discreetly secure them with bobby pins.

8. Pin spiral-curled hair upward and back with bobby pins. Start in front of the ears, working side to side for balance and symmetry, and move toward the back of head.

9. Arrange pinned hair to hide bobby pins using open-ended hairpins. Use a pick comb to fluff and refine your hair.

10. Secure the updo with hair spray.
