Different Textures Of Natural Hair

Natural hair textures are as unique as personalities.

Natural hair is versatile and unique. Depending on the texture of your hair, it is possible to style it into an Afro, curly style, wavy coiffed look, dreadlocks, braids and many other styles. There is no one texture that sums up natural hair, though. Textures can across your race or even between members of your own family. There is no one definition of what natural hair looks or feels like.

Kinky

The kinky hair texture is possibly the most common texture among black people. This is the original texture that the original African people possessed. Kinky hair can be difficult to style and tame, but once you learn how, it can also be one of the most attractive. Kinky hair is characterized by its thickness and coarse consistency. It does not change in texture when it is wet. Without the use of moisturizing and detangling products, kinky hair is usually tightly coiled and not able to be combed through. The tight curls of kinky hair are very fragile and prone to breakage. Because of this fact, tightly coiled natural hair can stay very short in length without proper care.

Wavy

Natural hair that is wavy has a curl pattern that is looser than kinky hair. Wavy hair is full of body. Rather than tightly coiled curls, individuals with wavy hair experience a change in their hair's texture when it comes into contact with water. Wavy hair may appear to be straight when it is wet, but it returns to its wavy pattern as it begins to dry. Wavy hair does not usually require a relaxer or other chemical treatment to increase its manageability. Blow drying is usually sufficient to achieve a straight look for those with wavy hair.

Curly

Curly hair is a combination of kinky and wavy hair textures. Curls are usually tight and spiral in shape, however the feel of the hair is not as coarse as kinky hair. When a strand of curly hair is pulled taught, it has a defined "S" shape. Humidity can cause the curls of this hair texture to become frizzy.

Commonalities

Although the textures are different, natural hair of all consistencies benefits from moisture. This need for added moisture is most present in kinky hair because of its delicate nature. Wavy and curly textures need moisture, but in a lesser quantity to avoid creating a weighed-down feel and greasy appearance.
