Chignon Wedding Hairstyles

An updo sets an elegant tone.

A chignon hairstyle is an all-up hairdo typically seen in formal occasions such as weddings, proms and even on the red carpet in Hollywood. While a bun is the typical technique used for pulling the hair up off the neck, this can be adapted to suit many purposes. A chignon hairstyle can be transformed to match the style of your wedding, from classic to romantic to modern.

High Bun

A high bun is a classic and elegant hair style that shows off your neckline and makes you appear longer and leaner, elongating your frame. The bun can be composed of a sleek and modern twisting of the hair in a circle around the crown of the head for a look of simple elegance. For a more intricate and styled look, pull the hair into a high ponytail. Curl the loose hair in small sections using a curling iron. Tuck each curl up into the crown of your head using bobby pins. Continue tucking in the curls until all the pieces of hair are secured in the bun. For an added touch of bridal beauty, insert a veil underneath the bun so it cascades down your back, or place a tiara at the front of the bun.

Low Bun

Another elegant and feminine choice for a chignon wedding hairstyle is a low bun. This style is easier to maneuver if you want the veil to cover your hair. The bun can be at the center of the nape of your neck or for an asymmetrical and more modern twist, pulled to one side. Tie the hair back into a low pony tail either in the center or to the side, depending on your preference. Curl the hair and tuck it in to form the bun. Add the veil to the top of your head. For a vintage look, instead of a veil, place a flower in your hair over one ear or at the top of the bun.

Messy Bun

For a modern and daring look, a slightly disheveled and loose bun can achieve sophistication with a dash of couture style. The bun can be either pulled high or left low. The difference between this style and the styles above is that the hair will not be tucked neatly and cleanly into the bun. The hair can still be curled or remain straight, depending on the look you are trying to achieve. A loose and curly bun will have a more romantic effect while a messy bun with straight hair is more cutting edge. Leave the ends of hair in the bun unsecured so they display outwards, creating rough lines to frame your face. This look should be complemented by a modern or couture wedding dress, to pull the ensemble together.
