Decide Which Perm Rod To Use

Using the right size perm rod will give you perfect curls.

Perming your hair gives it the body and curl texture you desire. There are many sizes of perm rods that are identified mostly by their colors. Depending on your hair length and what kind of curl you are looking for, these rods will help you get the perfect curl. Healthy hair takes a perm better than coarse damaged hair. Keep hair in good condition by getting regular trims and deep conditioning one or two times a week, before applying any chemicals.

Instructions

1. Examine your hair and decide which type of perm you want. There are different types and sizes of rods, as well as solutions for each type of perm; curl, body and wave. The rod size depends on hair length, texture and type of perm.

2. Use the smallest rod; red, for shorter hair styles that want very tight, kinky curls. Use this rod for hair 2-inches or shorter, as the rods are small and thin and cannot hold much hair.

3. Use a blue rod; the second smallest size for hair that is 2- to 3-inches long. This rod will give a tight curl for short hair or wave on very short hair.

4. Use a pink rod on short to medium-length hair types to achieve tight to medium curls for hair longer than 3-inches. On hair that is shorter; 2- to 3-inches, it will create waves.

5. Use a gray rod for hairstyles longer than 4-inches. This is a medium-sized rod that creates curls on hair that is up to 5-inches long -- and waves on hair that is shorter.

6. Use a white rod; the second largest on short hair to give it body. On medium length hair, the white rod gives wave and it gives full curl on hair longer than 6-inches.

7. Use the largest rod of them all -- purple -- on long hair. It gives body and wave to hair under 6-inches long and full curl to long and very long hair.
