Semi Formal Styles

The semi-formal style is a classy look suitable for many occasions.

Semi-formal dress styles have become the popular dress code for events such as weddings, dinner parties, corporate events and theater performances. The semi-formal dress style is quite similar to formal dress styles but clothing and accessories aren't as flashy. Semi-formal dress style includes clothing that complements your own style but with a few restrictions.

Men

Wear a suit with matching trousers, however, the vest isn't needed in the semi-formal style. Suit fabrics can be wool, gabardine or cashmere. Traditional colors of suits are blue and grey. Standard colors for suits are black, brown, tan, beige, khaki and teal. Bold colors for suits that are semi-formal are burgundy, olive, maroon, red and white. Go for linen suits for day events and light weight suits for evening events. Dark suits are worn in cold weather and light suits are worn in warm weather. A classic white button down shirt that is well fitted will complement your suit and is traditional. Shirts with light and fine prints are acceptable, however, make sure the shirt does not over power your whole appearance. A tie either straight or bow should be worn. The tie can be satin or silk. Your shoes should be classic leather dress shoes, like oxfords, that are polished and shined. Your shoes should match the color of your belt.

Women

A knee-length cocktail dress is popular at semi-formal events. The dress can also be above the knee with a one inch maximum. Long gowns are still exceptional. Gowns and dresses can be silk, polyester or cashmere. Trousers can also be worn with a dressy blouse. Trousers can be black, navy blue or grey down to the ankle in length. Light colored trousers should be worn for a day event and darker colors should be worn in the evening. Tops and blouses are preferably satin, crepe, chiffon or lace. Shoes should have at least a slight heel up to six inches, if comfortable.

Women's Accessories

Accessories should be kept at a minimum so that it does not take over your whole look. A ring and a simple necklace is acceptable. If you choose to wear long earrings, do not wear a necklace. Wearing no jewelery is also appropriate for semi-formal events.
