Style A Wig For Halloween

Know what you want your Halloween wig to look like before you start.

Styling a wig for a Halloween costume depends on what costume you're going to wear. Be sure to keep a picture nearby of what you want your Halloween wig to look like when you're finished styling it. And make certain you use the right products and brushes to get the look you want -- otherwise you could damage the wig.

Instructions

Styling a Halloween Wig

1. Place your wig on a stand for styling. Examine the picture of how you want your wig to look.

2. Comb out your wig. If you're combing a straight wig, start at the bottom of the hair with a wire brush or comb and work your way to the roots. This will keep you from damaging the wig. If you are combing a curly wig, use a plastic pick and begin to pick from the ends to the roots.

3. Use wig mousse for changing the style of the wig. Never use products with alcohol on wigs. Let the mousse air dry before you continue to style. Mousse helps your wig hold interesting, creative styles.

4. Roll the wig with hot rollers on a medium setting if you want to make round curls. Let the hot rollers cool completely before you take them out. Using the plastic pick, style the curls as you would your own hair. The wig mousse will keep the hold.

5. Tease the wig if you want bigger hair. Use a wire comb and pull out a bunch of hair. Run the comb backward through the roots of the wig until it looks tangled. You can leave it like that for a wild look -- or to make the wig bigger, you can comb down over the tease. Use the wire brush and gently comb the top of the hair over the tease until it looks big and smooth.

6. Add pigtails, barrettes or other hair decor on your wig as a final step if your costume calls for them.

Coloring Your Halloween Wig

7. Color your wig with normal hair dye that you can buy at the store.

8. Put your wig on a wig stand and apply dye with a wire comb. For highlights or streaks, comb the dye in the areas where you want the highlights. If you'd like bolder colors, mix acrylic paint with water until you have the shade you want. You can comb this mixture into your wig for deep, rich color.

9. Follow the directions on your dye package -- and for acrylics, let sit for 20 minutes.

10. Wash your wig with conditioning shampoo to get the dye out. Let it air dry to prevent damage.
