Updos remain a popular style choice for many brides. African American brides can create an updo on any hair texture, whether their hair is natural (with no chemical straighteners in it), texturized or relaxed. Black women can even style updos with braided hair. Consult with your stylist to choose the most flattering hairstyle for your wedding day.
Straight Hair
Black women who relax (chemically straighten) or press their hair straight can create updos that range from simple to complex. French twists, high buns and half-updos are all styles that work well with straight hair. When creating wedding day styles, you want them to last all day so use bobby pins that match the color of your hair and hairspray to hold the style in place.
Place a lightweight gel around your hairline to smooth any stray hairs and brush it in place before styling an updo. Twist hair or pull it up into a high bun. Add extensions for more volume or length.
For partial updos, leave the back straight or create spiral curls with a curling iron or rollers.
Curly Hair
Texturized hair is wavy or loosely curled, while natural black hair can be any texture from wavy to tightly coiled. You can create the same updos as you would on straight hair, although styling natural hair may take longer due to the careful detangling necessary. Let your hair texture add interest to your style instead of trying to straighten it.
Braids
Have a professional create a braided style for you. Because braids with extensions can take several hours to design, have this done a day or two before your wedding, not the morning of. If you have individual braid extensions, twist them into a French twist and secure with plenty of bobby pins. You can also opt for a style like Goddess braids, which are thick braids styled into an elegant updo, but know you won't be able to take these down easily until you're ready to redo the style.
Consider combination styles such as skinny cornrows that are pulled up and then accented with a curly topknot. Use hair additions such as buns and ribbon curls to add flair to a simple braid style.
Hair Accessories
If you don't wear a veil, use accessories like flowers, barrettes, pins and headbands designed for brides. Simple floral pins can be placed at the base of a high bun; place rhinestone pins throughout a style for added sparkle.
